Working People United (WoPU), a coalition comprising members of organised labour unions, professionals, artisans, traders and stakeholders across key sectors of Nigeria’s economy, has announced plans to confer its Responsible Citizen Badge on Pastor Enoch Adeboye in recognition of what it described as his patriotic disposition and defence of Nigeria while speaking abroad.
According to the group, the honour follows remarks attributed to Pastor Adeboye during the US–Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala in Washington, where he reportedly addressed criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s handling of insecurity in Nigeria.
In the remarks cited by WoPU, Pastor Adeboye reportedly said he does not subscribe to claims that the President has not done enough to tackle insecurity, explaining that once the Commander-in-Chief issues directives, the responsibility for implementation rests with the nation’s security agencies.
He was also quoted as saying that the President is not expected to personally participate in military operations by “putting on khaki,” noting that the constitutional role of the Commander-in-Chief is to provide strategic leadership, while operational responsibilities lie with the relevant security institutions.
WoPU described the cleric’s position as patriotic and responsible, saying it reinforces constitutional understanding of executive leadership while encouraging institutional accountability in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
The coalition further stated that Pastor Adeboye’s comments contribute to a more balanced national conversation on security at a time when the country requires unity, collaboration and responsible public engagement.
Speaking on the planned honour, the Convener of WoPU, Comrade Prince Akporeha Williams, said Pastor Adeboye demonstrated courage, moral clarity and commitment to national cohesion by presenting what the group considers a balanced perspective on Nigeria while outside the country.
“Pastor Adeboye has consistently demonstrated leadership that extends beyond the pulpit. His voice in moments of national tension reflects responsibility, wisdom and a sincere commitment to the stability and progress of Nigeria,” Williams said.
He added that, unlike some Nigerians who portray the country negatively while abroad, Pastor Adeboye chose to project what the organisation considers a more constructive image of Nigeria.
WoPU explained that the Responsible Citizen Badge Award recognises individuals whose public conduct and engagements promote national unity, responsible leadership and constructive dialogue on issues affecting the country.
The organisation also noted that the civic honour, unveiled during its Good Governance Summit held on June 25, 2026, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, is non-partisan and intended to celebrate voices that contribute positively to peace, accountability and national development.
