The Deputy General Manager, News and Current Affairs, Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Warri, and Head of its Sports Unit, Azuka Chiemeka, has been re-elected Vice President, South-South Zone of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) for another three-year term.
Chiemeka emerged unopposed at the association’s 2026 National Triennial Delegates Congress in Kaduna on Friday, August 28, 2026, joining a new National Executive Council elected to steer the affairs of SWAN for the next three years.
His return gives him another opportunity to contribute to the leadership of the association and advance the interests of sports journalists across the South-South region.
Chiemeka, a broadcaster and sports journalist, has been actively involved in sports reporting and journalism in Delta State, where he heads the Sports Unit of DBS, Warri.
His re-election came alongside the return of Isaiah Kemje Benjamin as SWAN National President for a second three-year term. Benjamin was also returned unopposed.
The congress, which brought together delegates from SWAN chapters across the country, produced two contested results at the national level.
Nyong Bonny Silas defeated Chigozie Chukwuleta 21–14 to emerge Deputy President, while Samuel Gangwaja of Adamawa State defeated the incumbent, Ahmed Kagana Amshi, 4–2 to win the Vice President, North-East Zone position.
Other zonal vice presidents elected were Zaharadeen Saleh for the North-West, Ikemefuna Asika for the South-East and Ayodeji Ogunsakin for the South-West, while Chiemeka retained the South-South position.
At the national level, Ikenna Okonkwo emerged Secretary-General, Samuel Ahmadu Deputy Secretary-General, Amusan Olufemi Ayorinde Treasurer and Ijeoma Nwante Financial Secretary.
The newly elected officers were subsequently sworn into office, formally commencing their three-year tenure.
Speaking after his re-election, Benjamin thanked delegates for renewing their confidence in his leadership and identified the welfare of members and professional development as key priorities for his second term.
He also called for unity within the association, urging members to put the politics of the election behind them and work collectively to strengthen SWAN.
The congress was held under the theme, “Harnessing the Power of Sports and the Media for National Development, Youth Empowerment and Global Competitiveness.”
With the new leadership now in place, attention shifts to how the administration will address members’ welfare, strengthen professional standards and position sports journalism to play a greater role in Nigeria’s sports development.
