Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned Urhobo musician and cultural ambassador, Prof. Johnson Oyibode Adjan, popularly known as “The Ogburine.”
In a condolence message on Tuesday, Senator Dafinone described the late music icon as a towering figure in Urhobo cultural history whose contributions to the preservation and promotion of indigenous traditions would remain invaluable for generations to come.
The senator said Prof. Adjan’s passing represents a painful loss not only to the Urhobo nation but also to all those who appreciate the importance of preserving cultural identity and heritage through music and artistic expression.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Johnson Oyibode Adjan, affectionately known as ‘The Ogburine,’ a towering figure in Urhobo music and one of the finest custodians of our cultural heritage. His death is a painful loss to the Urhobo nation and to all who value the preservation of indigenous traditions and identity,” Dafinone stated.
Reflecting on the late musician’s impact, the senator noted that Prof. Adjan’s songs served as more than entertainment, describing them as a living repository of Urhobo history, philosophy and values.
He said the deceased used his distinctive voice and thought-provoking lyrics to educate, inspire and reconnect generations of Urhobo people with their cultural roots.
“Prof. Adjan’s music was more than entertainment; it was a living archive of our history, philosophy and values. Through his thought-provoking lyrics and unique artistic style, he enlightened, inspired and connected generations of Urhobo sons and daughters to their roots. His work served as a bridge between the past and the present, ensuring that our culture remained vibrant and relevant,” he said.
Dafinone further described the late cultural icon as a respected ambassador whose influence transcended the entertainment industry.
According to him, Prof. Adjan’s unwavering dedication to promoting the Urhobo language, customs and wisdom earned him admiration across Nigeria and beyond.
“The echoes of his famous refrain, ‘Isi wadooo… iyaaa…,’ will continue to resonate as a reminder of his enduring legacy and remarkable contributions to society,” the senator added.
He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, the Urhobo nation, members of the creative industry and countless admirers touched by the late musician’s work and wisdom, praying for divine comfort and the peaceful repose of his soul.
“May God grant comfort to his family, the Urhobo people, the creative community and the many admirers whose lives he touched through his art and wisdom. May the soul of Prof. Johnson Oyibode Adjan find eternal rest,” Dafinone said.
