Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have intercepted a large consignment of illicit drugs valued at approximately ₦7.8 billion and arrested a suspected drug trafficking kingpin, Eke Henry Ifeanyi, following a months-long intelligence-led surveillance operation in Lagos.
Police authorities disclosed that the operation, carried out by officers attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU), culminated in the seizure of substantial quantities of Canadian Loud, a highly potent strain of cannabis increasingly linked to transnational drug trafficking networks.
According to police sources, investigators had monitored the activities of the suspect and his associates for several months before executing the operation that led to the arrest and recovery of the illicit consignment.
In a dramatic twist, the suspect allegedly attempted to derail the operation by offering the commander of the Special Protection Unit a ₦500 million bribe in exchange for abandoning the investigation and facilitating his escape from prosecution.
The police stated that the offer was immediately rejected by the officer, properly documented, and incorporated into the ongoing investigation.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Dis, commended the operatives involved in the operation, describing their conduct as a demonstration of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to the fight against organised crime.
The IGP praised the officers for refusing the alleged inducement, noting that ethical policing remains critical to strengthening public trust and achieving lasting success in law enforcement operations.
According to a statement attributed to the police leadership, the rejection of the bribe underscores the importance of accountability within the force and validates ongoing efforts to promote professionalism among officers at all levels.
“When you put your best foot forward at the grassroots, you get results,” the police chief reportedly stated while commending the officers for their actions.
Authorities said investigations are continuing to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected drug trafficking network, trace the origin and distribution channels of the seized narcotics, and uncover possible local and international collaborators.
The latest seizure is regarded as one of the most significant anti-drug operations recorded in Lagos in recent months and highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to disrupt organised criminal networks involved in the trafficking of illicit substances across Nigeria.
Police authorities urged members of the public to continue providing credible intelligence that could assist security agencies in combating drug-related crimes and other forms of organised criminal activity.
