The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restored six State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta State ahead of the 2027 General Election, a move expected to reshape the state’s political landscape and expand representation for affected communities.
The restored constituencies are Aniocha North II, Ika North East II, Sapele II, Ethiope West II, Warri South West II and Warri North II.
INEC said the action was in compliance with court judgments that directed the restoration of constituencies previously suppressed during electoral restructuring exercises. The commission also announced similar restorations in Benue, Jigawa and Kogi states.
According to the commission, political parties are expected to conduct fresh primaries in the affected constituencies between June 16 and June 25, 2026, to nominate candidates for the 2027 elections.
The development follows years of legal and political agitation by affected communities and lawmakers who argued that the constituencies were unlawfully removed despite existing court rulings. Previous resolutions by both chambers of the National Assembly had urged INEC to comply with judicial directives on the matter.
Political observers believe the restoration of Warri South West II and Warri North II could have far-reaching implications for Delta politics, particularly amid recent debates over ward and polling unit delineation in the Warri Federal Constituency.
INEC recently completed a Supreme Court-directed delineation exercise in Warri Federal Constituency, a process that generated intense political reactions among Ijaw, Itsekiri and Urhobo stakeholders.
The restoration is expected to increase representation in the Delta State House of Assembly and provide affected communities with additional legislative voices ahead of the next electoral cycle.
