The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has moved into the final phase of preparations for Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State, with sensitive electoral materials now in Osogbo and thousands of personnel mobilised for the poll.

The arrival of the materials coincides with the commission and security agencies intensifying preparations for an election expected to test the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC has confirmed that the election will hold on Saturday, August 15, 2026, following the earlier adjustment to the electoral timetable.

Reports on Tuesday indicated that sensitive materials had arrived in Osogbo ahead of deployment to the various local government areas.

More than 30,000 National Youth Service Corps members are expected to participate in the exercise as ad hoc electoral personnel, while security agencies have also increased their deployment ahead of voting day.

The preparations are unfolding against concerns over vote-buying and the conduct of political actors.

INEC has warned that vote-buying remains a threat to credible elections, while civil society groups have identified several local government areas requiring heightened security attention.

The police have also begun taking steps to address inflammatory political statements ahead of the election, with the Force inviting Senator Francis Fadahunsi over remarks allegedly calling for violence against opposition members.

The invitation does not by itself establish guilt, and the allegation remains a matter for investigation.

The election features incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke seeking another term, with opposition parties mounting a challenge in a contest being closely watched nationally.
