Nigeria defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has made an impressive early statement in the new English Championship season, strengthening his case for a return to the Super Eagles setup.
The Birmingham City defender recorded the highest number of possession recoveries across the entire English Football League on the opening weekend, according to Opta statistics.
Osayi-Samuel recovered possession 16 times during Birmingham City’s opening-day encounter against Sheffield United — five more than any other player in the EFL that weekend.
The performance has generated fresh attention around the 28-year-old defender, particularly as Nigeria continues to assess its options ahead of upcoming international assignments.
Osayi-Samuel joined Birmingham City after previously featuring in English football and has established himself as a versatile player capable of operating in defensive and wide roles.
His strong start comes at a time when scrutiny of Nigerian football has intensified following recent disappointments involving the country’s national teams.
Former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha has also raised concerns about Nigeria’s failure to maintain a consistent home venue for the national team.
Okocha argued that players perform better when they genuinely feel at home and enjoy strong support from local fans.
“Your players have to feel at home. They have to be comfortable. They must have a home ground,” Okocha said.
The former captain’s comments have added to the wider debate about the structural problems affecting Nigerian football.
For Osayi-Samuel, however, his early-season numbers provide a positive individual development and could put him firmly back into consideration for future Super Eagles selections.
