Defending champions Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat England 2-1 in Wednesday night’s FIFA World Cup semi-final, booking a place in Sunday’s final against Spain and ending the Three Lions’ hopes of lifting their first World Cup title since 1966.
England looked destined for the final after Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, capping an impressive attacking move to put Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead before a packed crowd at Atlanta Stadium.
The goal appeared to reward England’s disciplined display as they frustrated the defending champions for much of the contest.
However, Argentina mounted a relentless late assault. Midfielder Enzo Fernández restored parity in the 85th minute with a powerful strike after sustained pressure, before captain Lionel Messi delivered a pinpoint cross deep into stoppage time for substitute Lautaro Martínez to head home the winner and spark wild celebrations among the South American supporters.
The victory sends Lionel Scaloni’s side into a second consecutive World Cup final, where they will face Spain in a blockbuster title decider.
England, meanwhile, must now regroup for the third-place playoff against France after another agonising exit at the semi-final stage.
Speaking after the match, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised his team’s resilience, while England were left to reflect on a painful collapse after leading with only minutes remaining.
Questions are also expected over Tuchel’s tactical approach as Argentina dominated the closing stages before completing the remarkable turnaround.
