The Governing Board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering sustainable development projects and programmes across oil-producing communities in Delta State following the extension of its tenure by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Chairman of the Commission, Olorogun John Nani, gave the assurance while briefing journalists after the board’s first meeting since the approval of its one-year tenure extension by the governor.
The meeting was held on Wednesday at the commission’s corporate headquarters in Warri.
Olorogun Nani described the extension as a demonstration of Governor Oborevwori’s confidence in the board’s leadership and performance, assuring that members would remain focused on advancing the developmental mandate of DESOPADEC for the benefit of host communities.
According to him, the board remains committed to ensuring that projects and interventions of the commission continue to positively impact the lives of residents in the oil-producing areas of the state.
“We are deeply grateful to His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for the confidence he has reposed in us through the extension of our tenure. This gesture is not one we take for granted,” Nani said.
“The governor has challenged us to do more, and we are determined to justify this confidence by redoubling our efforts in the service of the people of the oil-producing communities.”
The DESOPADEC chairman noted that the board reviewed ongoing projects and programmes during the meeting and deliberated on strategies to enhance service delivery, project execution and community-focused interventions.
He stressed that the commission would continue to align its activities with the MORE Agenda of the Oborevwori administration, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, youth empowerment, human capital development and economic growth.
Nani further assured stakeholders that the board would sustain transparency, accountability and prudent management of resources in carrying out its responsibilities.
“Our mandate is clear. We are committed to ensuring that every intervention of DESOPADEC translates into meaningful development for our people. We shall continue to work collectively as a board to deepen the impact of the commission across the mandate areas,” he stated.
He also commended members of the board, management and staff of the commission for their dedication and cooperation, urging them to remain focused on achieving the vision of the commission.
Recall that Governor Oborevwori had sought the approval of the Delta State House of Assembly for the extension of the board’s tenure following the expiration of its statutory term.
In a letter read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, the governor explained that the request became necessary in line with the law establishing the commission.
The tenure extension subsequently received legislative backing, enabling the board to continue overseeing the affairs of DESOPADEC for another year.
