Democrats have regained control of the United States Senate and are on course to take the House of Representatives after a sweeping performance in the November 3 midterm elections, dealing a major setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
The results are expected to reshape the final two years of Trump’s presidency, giving Democrats greater influence over legislation, federal spending and congressional oversight.
The Associated Press reported that Democrats won six Senate seats from Republicans and made substantial gains in the House, while election projections indicated the party was close to securing a majority in the lower chamber.
The outcome marks a sharp reversal from Republicans’ control of both chambers before the election.
Among the most consequential victories was Democrat James Talarico’s win in Texas, ending a decades-long Republican hold on the state’s Senate seat.
Democrats also captured Senate seats in states including North Carolina, Ohio, Kansas and Maine, according to election projections.
The results reflected voter frustration over the cost of living and dissatisfaction with the Trump administration, issues that featured prominently in the campaign.
Voters also weighed immigration policy, healthcare costs and the president’s broader performance.
Trump, who had urged voters to treat the midterms as a referendum on his presidency, acknowledged being surprised by the outcome but rejected the suggestion that it represented a personal repudiation.
He cited the impact of the conflict with Iran and higher fuel prices in explaining the Republican losses.
Democratic leaders celebrated the gains and promised to use their new congressional leverage to address household costs and hold the administration accountable.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the party had listened to voters and pledged to deliver for Americans “with or without the president.”
The House outcome remained subject to continuing vote counts, although projections pointed to Democrats taking control.
A Democratic majority would likely enable the party to lead committees and intensify scrutiny of administration policies.
The midterms also produced significant gubernatorial shifts, with Democrats winning governorships in Georgia, Ohio, Iowa and Texas, according to the Associated Press.
The election is widely viewed as an early test of the political landscape ahead of the 2028 presidential race, while the final congressional balance will determine how much of Trump’s agenda can advance during the remainder of his term.
