The Nigeria Democratic Congress has formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria and adopted a single four-year tenure arrangement for its candidate, in what observers describe as a major political development ahead of the next general election.
The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention held in Abuja on Saturday, where delegates reportedly endorsed a motion calling for rotational leadership between the South and the North.
The motion was moved by Afam Victor Ogene, the member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, who argued that the arrangement would promote equity, national cohesion and fairness in the country’s political leadership.
Delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory adopted the proposal through a voice vote, effectively reserving the party’s 2027 presidential ticket for a southern candidate who would serve only one four-year term before power rotates to the North in the next electoral cycle.
“The decision is rooted in fairness, equity and the need to strengthen national unity,” a party source familiar with the convention proceedings said.
The development comes days after former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, formally joined the NDC following their exit from the African Democratic Congress-led coalition.
Political analysts say the zoning arrangement appears tailored to create a smooth pathway for southern aspirants, particularly Obi, whose growing influence within the opposition camp has continued to shape political alignments ahead of 2027.
The convention’s resolution also stipulates that after the completion of the southern presidency’s single term, the party’s presidential ticket would automatically return to Northern Nigeria.
Insiders within the party described the formula as a structured power-sharing model intended to calm regional tensions and broaden the party’s national appeal.
“The idea is to reassure every section of the country that no region will dominate power under the NDC arrangement,” another party official reportedly stated.
The latest move is expected to intensify political calculations both within the opposition and the ruling camp as parties continue consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
Although no official presidential candidate has emerged, the zoning decision is already fueling speculations about a possible Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, with northern political heavyweight Kwankwaso seen by some observers as a potential running mate in a broader coalition strategy.
Reuters had earlier reported that Obi and Kwankwaso dumped the ADC coalition over internal disputes before aligning with the NDC, a move that significantly altered the opposition landscape.
The NDC is also expected to deliberate on constitutional amendments, party restructuring and electoral strategy as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
The party’s latest resolution makes it one of the earliest political platforms to publicly outline a rotational presidency framework ahead of the next election cycle.
