The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has handed political parties an additional three days to complete the submission of candidates for the 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

The commission moved the deadline from Saturday, August 8, to Tuesday, August 11, 2026, following appeals by political parties for more time to complete their submissions through the designated electronic platform.

INEC said the extension was approved to accommodate parties that were still finalising their candidate information and documentation as the nomination process progresses.

The commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, confirmed the adjustment, saying the new deadline would allow parties to conclude the process within the revised electoral timetable.

The development comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections, with the nomination of candidates expected to shape the next phase of campaigns across the states.

Meanwhile, attention is also shifting to Osun State, where INEC is preparing for the rescheduled governorship election on August 15.

The Osun election was originally scheduled for August 8 but was moved to August 15 following changes to the electoral timetable arising from the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026. INEC’s revised timetable confirms the August 15 date.
