A new socio-political pressure group, the Ijaw Political Grassroot Development Movement (IPGDM), has been launched with a mandate to engage governments at all levels and other critical stakeholders on the development needs of Ijaw communities in Delta State.
The group said its emergence was driven by the need to address what it described as longstanding neglect and underdevelopment in many Ijaw riverine communities despite their significant contributions to the economy of Delta State and Nigeria.
Convener and Chairman of the movement, Chief Sheriff Mulade (PhD), said the organisation would serve as a constructive advocacy platform focused on drawing attention to infrastructure deficits, social welfare concerns and the urgent need for sustainable development across Ijaw areas.
According to him, many Ijaw communities still lack basic amenities and developmental projects, a situation he said no longer reflects the economic importance of the people to the state and national economy.
Chief Mulade stated that the movement was prepared to champion the cause of the people through dialogue, policy advocacy and peaceful engagement with government institutions and relevant stakeholders.
He said the group’s mission is to help change the narrative of underdevelopment by promoting inclusion, fairness and strategic investments in Ijaw communities across Delta State.
The IPGDM chairman also appealed to sons and daughters of Ijaw extraction in the state, as well as other well-meaning individuals, to support the initiative and participate in the campaign for progress.
He stressed that unity and constructive engagement remain critical to achieving meaningful and lasting development in the affected communities.
Chief Mulade added that the movement would continue consultations with community leaders, youth groups, women organisations and policymakers as part of efforts to build consensus for a stronger and more prosperous Ijaw nation in Delta State.
The launch of the group is expected to open fresh conversations around equity, inclusion and grassroots development in the riverine areas of the state.
