The Federal High Court sitting in Asaba on Tuesday ordered the remand of self-styled media activist, Mr. Victor Ojei, popularly known as Wong Box in Charge No. FHC/ASB/32C/2026 over allegations bordering on cyberbullying, dissemination of false information, and allegedly injurious online publications targeted at the revered Obi of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II.

Mr. Ojei was subsequently remanded at the Federal Correctional Centre, Ogwashi-Uku, following proceedings before the court.

According to the prosecution, the charges stem from several publications allegedly made by Victor Ojei on his Facebook page accusing the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku of illegally selling land to Chinese nationals.

Prosecutors argued before the court that the publications were false, misleading, and calculated to incite public outrage and hatred against the monarch.

The prosecution further maintained that the land in question was already lawfully vested in a private company and covered by a valid Delta State Government Certificate of Occupancy issued as far back as 2011 — nearly eight years before the present Obi ascended the throne of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom.

The matter has generated widespread public attention within Delta State and beyond, especially due to the serious implications of online misinformation and reputational attacks on traditional institutions.

Legal observers note that under Nigeria’s cybercrime framework, elements often examined in cyberbullying and false publication cases include: intentional dissemination of false or misleading information online, use of electronic platforms to harass, intimidate, or damage reputation, publications capable of causing public disturbance or inciting hatred, and repeated online conduct alleged to be malicious in nature.

During proceedings, the court reportedly declined to immediately entertain the bail application filed on behalf of the defendant. The presiding judge instead adjourned the matter to May 25, 2026, to allow the prosecution to file its counter-affidavit in opposition to the bail request before arguments were taken.

Sources present in court stated that the prosecution emphasised the extensive online circulation of the alleged publications and the numerous hostile and inflammatory reactions the posts attracted across social media platforms.

Police sources claim that Victor Ojei and his lawyers had attempted to truncate the charges and case by appealing first via a petition to the IGP in Abuja but that petition was declined in Abuja.

According to the said sources, they then rushed to the Commissioner of Police in Delta state with another petition requesting that the case be halted.

The CP Delta after a review with the Head of Legal, or the state police directed that the case continue.

The case is expected to further test the increasing willingness of Nigerian courts and law enforcement authorities to scrutinise alleged abuse of social media platforms for the spread of false information, cyber harassment, and reputational attacks against individuals and institutions.

The Obi of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom has repeatedly maintained that misinformation and orchestrated online attacks against the throne and the kingdom would continue to be addressed strictly through lawful and judicial means.
