Emetulu-led Delta Assembly Cmte decries decay of libraries, raises concern over poor reading habit

Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Education on Friday expressed deep concerns over the dilapidated state of Libraries in the state,

The Committee Chairman, Chukwuemeke Charles Emetulu, stated this when he led other members to the Delta State Library Board, Asaba, in continuation of the committee’s legislative oversight to Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, under the education sector of the state.

Emetulu urged members of the board to in collaboration with the State Commissioner for Higher Education come up with a holistic approach to revamp the library system in the State.

Inspecting the various sections of the State Library in Asaba, the lawmaker advocated that reading culture must not die among the people, and suggested that the board transit into digital library system which will be of immense benefits to the State.

He stressed that there was the need to promote optimal performance in government Institutions to complement state government’s goals in the education sector.

Emetulu alongside Vice Chairman of the committee, Hon. Benson Obire and other members including Hon. Ferguson Onwo, Emmanuel Sinebe, Marilyn Okowa-Daramola, Bridget Anyafulu and Matthew Omonade, were also at the headquarters of the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, Asaba.

There he explained that the legislature was mandated by law to carry out oversight responsibility to enable it ascertain the level of implementation of financial appropriations made available to the MDAs.

While commending the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board for maintaining existing scholarship schemes, the lawmaker who represents Ndokwa West in the House urged the officials to put in more effort in ensuring that approval are gotten to meet the welfare of Delta State students.

The lawmaker assured members of the board of the committee’s readiness to collaborate with them to ensure that Delta State Students receive bursary from the state.

Emetulu at the Ministry of Higher Education, commended the Commissioner and his team for efforts in improving standards in tertiary education in the State.

He called for more efforts in that regards to promote academic excellence as well as infrastructural development in Institutions.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, Executive Secretary, Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, Comrade Shedrack Agediga, and Dr. Godfrey Enitan, Chairman, Delta State Library Board in their various remarks highlighted some of the challenges faced appealed for more support from the Lawmakers in mitigating some of the challenges.
