Waive pays homage to Udu monarch, pledges total allegiance

In a bold and symbolic gesture to reaffirm the bond between political leadership and the traditional institution in Udu Kingdom, the member representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South, and Udu Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Revd. Francis Ejiroghene Waive, on Sunday, led a high-powered delegation to pay homage to the new monarch of Udu Kingdom, HRM Engr. Mike Ogheneovo Orugbo JP, KP, Okporua I.

The homage, which took place at the monarch’s temporary palace, turned into a grand carnival, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Udu people. Highlights included vibrant performances by the traditional Udje dance band from Aladja, and colourful displays by jubilant residents and cultural groups.

Hon. Waive, who hails maternally from Otor-Udu—the traditional and political headquarters of the kingdom—arrived in grand style, accompanied by a large entourage of political leaders, party faithful, religious figures, eminent chiefs, and well-wishers from within and outside the kingdom.

Speaking at the ceremony, the federal lawmaker expressed delight over the peaceful emergence of His Majesty, describing him as a monarch of impeccable pedigree and nationwide acclaim. He affirmed that Udu Kingdom has in HRM Orugbo, “a true king,” and pledged his full allegiance to the throne.

Hon. Waive also committed to playing an active role during the presentation of the Staff of Office and in supporting the rites of passage for the late monarch. He commended the warm reception accorded him, particularly by the Udu Traditional Council, the Otota of Udu Kingdom Chief Sam Odibo, and the Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government, Olorogun Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode.

He used the occasion to highlight his numerous constituency projects and interventions in Udu, most notably the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Ovwian. He introduced the institution’s pioneer Chief Medical Director, Prof. Kingsley Akaba, a distinguished son of the kingdom, to the monarch.

In his royal response, HRM Engr. Mike Orugbo appreciated Hon. Waive’s honour to tradition and applauded his developmental strides. He described the lawmaker as a “true son of the soil” and assured him of the palace’s unwavering support in matters concerning the progress of Udu Kingdom.

The event ended with the exchange of symbolic gifts and royal blessings, followed by a brief reception.

Also speaking, the Udu Council Chairman, Olorogun Vincent Oyibode, described the visit as a historic and strategic move to strengthen collaboration between traditional leadership and political stakeholders. He lauded Hon. Waive as “a rare breed in politics” whose track record in the National Assembly speaks volumes.

Prominent personalities at the event included Chief Richard Odibo, Chief Henry Afure Sakpra, Chief Austin Emaduku, Chief Lucky Mughelle, Chief Friday Orugbo, Chief Bruno Akpomedarho, Chief Moses Uparan, Chief Dr. Richard Iyede, Prof. Ezekiel Agbalagba (Vice Chancellor, FUPRE), Chief Steve Sokoh, Ven. Gabriel Kpagban, Hon. Justice Iyasere, Sir Chief Francis Orogun, Revd D.P.O Sotu, Prof. Lucky Ogodo, Chief Franks Ugen, Sir Isaiah Kekeje, Chief John Olomu, Hon. Alex Kemeruvwe, Hon. David Rheriobore, Barr. Pat Willie, members of the Aladja Grammar School Old Students Association, and many others.
