Authorities of Ughelli North Local Government Council have raised concerns over the activities of individuals reportedly impersonating environmental marshals and extorting transport operators and motorists within the area.

In a statement by Fidelis Erhiurhore, Principal Secretary to the Council Chairman, Jaro Egbo, the council disclosed that the suspects said to be dressed in green uniforms and claiming to be officials of the Delta State Environmental Management Agency (DESMA), have been harassing commercial tricycle (Keke) and motorcycle (Okada) riders as well as other motorists.

According to the statement, the alleged impostors are reportedly demanding and collecting sums ranging from ₦30,000 to ₦150,000 from members of the public.

The council emphasised that the individuals are operating illegally, stressing that their actions are not backed by any existing law in Delta State.

Residents, transport unions, and motorists were therefore advised not to submit to intimidation or extortion by the suspects.

The council urged anyone who encounters such individuals to promptly report the matter to the local government chairman or the nearest security agency for swift intervention.

Authorities also assured the public that steps are being taken to track down and prosecute those responsible for the incident, to restore order, and to protect road users across Ughelli North communities.
