US-based Nigerian doctor commits suicide over unfavourable divorce ruling

36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist based in the United States, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, has taken his own life over a contentious child support ruling against him.

Born in Anambra State, Dr. Erinne, who took his life on Sunday, January 26, 2025,  faced a prolonged and difficult divorce battle with his estranged wife, culminating in a court decision that mandated he pay $15,000 monthly in child support.

Clayton Udo, a Nigerian-American, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a post on X.com, stating that the court’s ruling had a devastating financial impact on Dr. Erinne, contributing to his tragic decision.

He wrote, “The abuse of African men in the USA must come to an end. In a deeply troubling case, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, an American-trained cardiologist, allegedly took his own life after an American court ordered him to pay his ex-wife $15,000 monthly following a protracted divorce.”

This incident underscores systemic issues within the legal system that disproportionately affect African men.

Udo, who claims expertise in psychological and emotional abuse, noted that Dr. Erinne had incurred significant legal fees throughout the process, only for the court’s verdict to turn against him.

“He shot himself,” Udo revealed. “He spent thousands of dollars in legal fees—money that ultimately went to waste. This process can impoverish individuals. You go to court, and they take all your money. He lost his license as a cardiologist due to this case, in addition to the $15,000 monthly support obligation and restricted access to his children.”

Dr. Erinne, born on March 4, 1988, is survived by his children, Ugonna and Munachi, as well as his parents, Engr. Chris and Mrs. Chinwe Erinne, and his siblings, Chuks, Onyi, Kenny, and Gechi.
