President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described poverty and insecurity as major national emergencies requiring urgent and sustained action from all levels of government.
The President made the remark during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration in Abuja, where he was represented by senior government officials before labour leaders and workers from across the country.
He said no nation can achieve meaningful growth when citizens are unable to work safely or when wages can no longer meet the rising cost of living.
According to him, insecurity continues to disrupt farming, trade, transportation and investment, while poverty weakens household income and reduces productivity.
Tinubu stated that his administration is pursuing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, improving infrastructure, supporting businesses and creating more employment opportunities.
He also appealed to organised labour to continue dialogue with government, noting that cooperation remains vital in resolving national challenges.
The President congratulated Nigerian workers on May Day, praising their resilience and commitment despite economic pressures facing the country.
