The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Warri Chapel, has announced plans to hold a capacity-building programme for journalists as part of efforts to promote professional, ethical and credible coverage of the 2027 General Elections.
The training, themed “Strengthening Professional Journalism for Credible Election Coverage,” is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Main Hall of the Government House Annex, Warri.
A statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade John Glover, and the Secretary, Comrade Ogheneruona Oyibo, said the programme will commence at 11:00 a.m.
According to the statement, the General Manager of Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Warri, Pastor Malcolm Oteri, will declare the event open, while renowned engineer and public affairs commentator, Engr. Matthew Tonlagha, will deliver the keynote address.
The organisers disclosed that veteran journalists and media professionals, including Dr. Godwin Orhadahwe, Mr. Linus Chima, seasoned broadcasters, and a representative of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), will facilitate sessions focusing on ethical reporting, election coverage standards, misinformation management and conflict-sensitive journalism.
The statement noted that the training was conceived to prepare journalists for the unique challenges associated with election reporting and to reinforce the media’s role in deepening Nigeria’s democratic culture.
Speaking on the importance of the programme, the NUJ DBS Warri Chapel said journalists must be adequately prepared to navigate the complexities of electoral reporting in a rapidly evolving information environment.
“As Nigeria gradually approaches the 2027 General Elections, the responsibility on journalists becomes even greater. The media remains a critical pillar of democracy, and credible election coverage begins with well-trained professionals who understand the ethics and demands of the profession,” the Chapel stated.
The Chapel stressed that election reporting requires accuracy, fairness, objectivity and strict adherence to professional standards at all times.
“This training is designed to equip journalists with practical tools for reporting electoral processes responsibly, combating misinformation, verifying facts and promoting peaceful democratic participation through balanced and factual reportage,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to continuous professional development, the Chapel emphasized the need for journalists to remain agents of truth and accountability during election periods.
“The credibility of elections is often influenced by the quality of information available to the public. Through this programme, the Chapel is investing in the professional development of journalists to ensure the public receives accurate, timely and responsible information during the electoral process,” it further stated.
The NUJ DBS Warri Chapel expressed confidence that the initiative would enhance journalists’ preparedness for the 2027 electoral cycle and contribute significantly to strengthening public trust in the media.
The union urged journalists from print, broadcast and digital media organisations across Delta State and beyond to take advantage of the training opportunity and actively participate in the workshop.
