Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Delta State Chapter, has felicitated with the newly elected President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya.

Comrade Yahya polled 436 votes to defeat his main challenger, Dele Atunbi who scored 97 votes at the NUJ 8th Triennial Delegates Conference held on November 27, 2024, in Owerri, Imo State.

NAWOJ Delta in a statement by the chairperson, Comrade Sonia Unobunjo and Secretary, Comrade Tracy Ikolomi attributed Comrade Yahya’s overwhelming victory to his humility, hard work, dedication, and commitment to upholding journalistic professional ethics.

“We also celebrate Dr (Mrs) Abimbola Oyetunde as the first woman journalist to ascend to the position of Deputy National President (DNP) of the NUJ. This milestone serves as a testament to her intelligent, and unwavering commitment as well as dedication to the advancement of our great union.

“The choice of Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde as Deputy President reflects a deliberate effort to promote justice and equity in the industry.

“NAWOJ Delta equally commend the re-election of Comrade Okpaka Dokubo as Vice President, South-South Zone F, and Comrade Victor Angese as Zonal Secretary.

“We salute the immediate past National President, Chief Chris Isuguzo, MFR for his leadership style and charge members of the union across the 36 States including the FCT to give maximum support to the new leadership under Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahl for a progressive NUJ.

“NAWOJ Delta urges Comrade Alhassan Yahya and his team to remain true to their electioneering promises and lead the NUJ to greater heights.

“We pledge unwavering support and cooperation to ensure a healthy, peaceful, progressive, wealthy and successful tenure.

“May God Almighty grant you wisdom to lead, protect you and your team as you pilot the affairs of our great union,” said NAWOJ Delta.
