Collapse of MVA transformer throws Warri area into massive load shedding

Electricity consumers in parts of Warri metropolis in Delta State have been complaining of irregular power supply following the collapse of a major transformer at the PTI substation.

A source said one of the two 45 MVA transformers operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) parked up over a week ago forcing the electricity company to embark on massive load shedding.

Several areas of the Metropolis under the 33kv line have been experiencing massive power cuts.

Officials of TCN refused to comment on the incident but it was gathered that if new transformers are brought in to replace the aged ones the entire city might be plunged into darkness.

The authorities have since approved two one hundred MVA transformers and an initial upgrade of facilities had been completed but the transformers are yet to arrive months after the approval.

Another source said the transformers are still at the ports waiting to be cleared and there are fears that they may be diverted.

One person who spoke on condition of anonymity explained that except something was done urgently to install the two one hundred MVA transformers people in the area will pay more for darkness than light.

The person said the ball was in the court of TCN to supply and install the transformers which are a Federal Government and World Bank initiative to improve electricity supply in the area.
