Senator representing Delta Central, Ede Dafinone, has paid glowing tribute to renowned Niger Delta elder statesman, Chief Godwin Ogbetuo, as he clocks 96 years, describing him as one of the region’s most enduring voices of conscience and principled leadership.
In a statement issued on Friday to mark the birthday, Dafinone said Chief Ogbetuo’s life remains a powerful testament to courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice, noting that his influence has shaped political thought and governance culture in Delta State and the wider Niger Delta for decades.
The senator recalled Ogbetuo’s pivotal role during Nigeria’s return to democratic rule, particularly his tenure as Chairman of the Delta State Elders and Leaders Forum, where he provided strategic guidance and moral leadership at a time of political uncertainty.
According to Dafinone, Chief Ogbetuo worked closely with respected regional leaders, including the late Pa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, to promote accountability, strengthen democratic institutions, and challenge abuses of power in governance.
“Even at 96, Chief Ogbetuo remains a symbol of intellectual clarity and fearless advocacy,” the senator said, adding that the elder statesman has consistently spoken out against corruption and poor leadership, earning him respect across political and generational divides.
Dafinone emphasized that Ogbetuo’s readiness to confront authority in defence of the public interest has made him a reference point for ethical leadership in the Niger Delta.
The Delta Central lawmaker prayed for continued strength, good health, and peace of mind for the nonagenarian, expressing hope that his experience and counsel would continue to inspire both present leaders and younger Nigerians.
Chief Godwin Ogbetuo is widely regarded as one of the foremost Pan–Niger Delta leaders whose legacy is anchored on service, principle, and steadfast advocacy for good governance.
