Following the deplorable condition of the Eku/Abraka/Agbor Federal Highway, residents of Abraka on Monday staged a peaceful protest to draw the attention of the Federal and Delta State Governments to urgently fix the road.

The protesters who blocked the road as early as 7:30 Monday morning with makeshift woods and burn fire lamented that the failed road is now a nightmare to residents of the University town and commuters plying the popular route.

The protest caused gridlock leading to disruption of commercial activities.

In a video which went viral on social media, the protesters could be heard complaining about the harrowing experience of residents plying the main road and adjoining roads in the town.

They appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently fix the Federal road and other roads in the locality.

The protesters also lamented that economic activities have been grounded in Abraka town because of poor electricity supply and power outages in other parts of the area.

They equally called on the Delta State Government to intervene for electric power to be fully restored to the University town.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Executive Council in its last meeting approved remedial works to be carried on failed portions of the Highway.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the State Commissioner for Works in charge of Rural and Riverine Roads, Mr. Charles Aniagwu said that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was deeply worried about the deplorable nature of federal roads across the state.

Mr. Aniagwu disclosed that the state Executive Council had directed the Ministries of Works (Highways and Rural Roads) to carry out remedial works on federal roads, particularly the Asaba-Benin Expressway and the Agbor-Eku Road with a view to making them more motorable for road users in the state.
