In every election cycle, political constituencies eventually return to a familiar question: who truly understands the people and has the courage to speak for them? As conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to take shape across Delta Central, one name increasingly surfacing in grassroots discussions is Hon. Efe Ofobruku.
For many in the Uvwie Local Government Area, the Ekpan-born politician is not a newcomer seeking relevance. He is a figure whose political journey has unfolded within the communities that make up the Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency, giving him both familiarity with the terrain and credibility among long-time constituents.
Hon. Ofobruku served two terms representing Uvwie in the Delta State House of Assembly, first winning election in 2011 and securing re-election in 2015 under opposition platforms before later aligning with the All Progressives Congress (APC). During his time in the Assembly, he became known for active participation in legislative debates and constituency advocacy.
Supporters often point to his role in legislative discussions around development in the Warri-Uvwie economic axis, including backing policies intended to stimulate infrastructure and economic growth in the area. He played a key role in the construction of the Effurun Roundabout Flyover, the development and establishment of the Delta Mall (Shoprite), as well as the reconstruction of Army Day Secondary School and Model Technical College, Effurun, among other projects. Beyond legislative duties, he was also known for community engagement and empowerment initiatives aimed at supporting youths and small businesses within his constituency.
His political experience also extends beyond the legislature. During the 2019 election cycle, Ofobruku served as Director of Administration in the Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council for the re-election of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. Following the election, he was appointed Special Adviser to the governor, a role he held from 2019 to 2021, further expanding his involvement in governance and policy coordination at the state level.
Political observers in Delta Central frequently note that Ofobruku’s strength lies in his deep roots in Ekpan, one of the most politically vibrant communities in Uvwie. In local political culture, proximity matters. Leaders who grew within the communities they represent tend to command stronger grassroots trust. Ofobruku’s long-standing relationships across Uvwie, Okpe and Sapele have helped him maintain political relevance even after leaving the State Assembly.
For many constituents, this familiarity translates into accessibility, something voters frequently complain is lacking in federal representation. In conversations across the constituency, some residents say representation in Abuja should be more visible and assertive in addressing local concerns.
Another element shaping Ofobruku’s political profile is his reputation as an outspoken advocate. During his years in the State Assembly, he often spoke on issues affecting the Warri-Uvwie axis, particularly economic opportunities, infrastructure and community development.
Such assertiveness is increasingly viewed by supporters as a political asset in a constituency where voters periodically express frustration over perceived weak representation at the federal level.
In recent years, Ofobruku aligned himself with the APC, positioning himself within a major national platform ahead of future contests. The move also placed him within a party structure that continues to expand its influence in Delta politics.
The federal constituency is currently represented in the House of Representatives of Nigeria by Hon Benedict Etanabene, who was elected in the 2023 general elections. As is common midway through legislative terms, political discussions have begun to focus on representation, constituency outreach and legislative visibility.
In such moments, voters often revisit former leaders whose track records remain part of public memory. For Ofobruku’s supporters, that memory forms part of the argument that he deserves another opportunity—this time at the federal level.
Among grassroots party loyalists and community figures across Uvwie, Okpe and Sapele, the argument is straightforward. They say he understands the constituency, has legislative experience, maintains accessibility with the grassroots and has demonstrated a willingness to speak boldly on public issues.
With more than a year before the next election cycle formally begins, the political atmosphere in the Okpe-Sapele-Uvwie axis is already evolving. Should Hon. Efe Ofobruku formally declare interest in the House of Representatives seat, his aspiration would likely reshape the race and trigger new political alignments across the constituency.
For now, what is clear is that his name has returned to the political conversation. In Nigerian politics, that is often the first indication that a contest may already be taking shape long before campaign season begins.
