Police in Delta appeals for calm as trader dies from stray bullet

The Delta State Police Command has expressed regret over the unfortunate incident that led to the death of a woman in Asaba from a stray bullet.

In a press release on Wednesday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, the Command noted that the death of Amaka Ohanaja, a trader from a stray bullet was highly regrettable and condemnable.

The Command however exonerated its men from the death saying, “… Police have no hand in it and that the incident will be discretely investigated and the culprit brought to book.”

The statement reads: “The Deita State Police Command has been notifed of an unfortunate incident which occurred on the 22/12/2020 at about 1730hrs, during a routine patrol of Deita State Operation Deta Hawk team 002 which resulted in the death of one Amaka Ohanaja a trader.

“While the Command deeply sympathze and condole with the family of the deceased on this unifortunate incident which occurred on the 22/12/2020 at about 1730hrs when the Joint Patrol Team of Operation Delta Hawk (OPDH)
which comprises of the Army, Police, DSS, NSCDC and Vigilante flagged down an unregistered Lexus jeep with tinted glasses for a routine check but the two male occupants in a suspicIous manner beat the security men and sped off towards the Ajaga bush camp in Asaba.

“Some members of the Operation Delta Hawk (OPDH) in pursuit opened fire on the vehicie in a bid to demobilise it and arrest the occupants.

“The driver of the Lexus car, one Joshua Ona ‘m’ 30yrs was hit by stray bullet and immediately rushed to New General Hospitai Okpanam for treatment while the vehicle was recovered to OPDH Headquarters.

“Thereafter, information received that a woman who was identified as Amaka Ohanaja a trader in her shop around the same axis was alleged to have been hit by stray bullet and consequenty died.

“While the incident is highly regrettable and condemnable. We wish to assure the family of the deceased and members of the public that Police have no hand in it and that the incident will be discretely investigated and the culprit brought to book.”
