Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Punch Newspaper Correspondent, Mr. Matthew Ochei, describing his passing as a painful loss to the media community, Delta State and the nation at large.
Ochei, who hailed from Ukunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, died in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 43 years old.
In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori commiserated with the Ochei family, journalists across the state, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council.
He described the late journalist as a dedicated professional who discharged his duties with courage, integrity and a strong sense of responsibility.
According to the Governor, Ochei’s unwavering commitment to truth, public enlightenment and ethical journalism earned him widespread respect within and beyond the media industry.
“This is indeed a critical and painful moment. Delta State has lost a committed and fearless voice who informed and educated the public with professionalism and integrity.
His untimely passing is a heavy blow to his family, the media community and all who believe in responsible journalism,” Oborevwori stated.
The Governor further extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, praying that God grants them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
He assured that the Delta State Government stands in solidarity with the NUJ and the entire media community at this difficult time.
Similarly, the State Commissioner for Special Duties (Government House), Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, described Ochei as a committed journalist and unionist whose professionalism and courage endeared him to colleagues and stakeholders.
In his condolence message, Osuoza said Ochei’s contributions to the journalism profession and the NUJ would be fondly remembered, adding that his death had created a void that would be difficult to fill.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, also expressed profound shock over Ochei’s death.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, and the Acting Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, the union described the loss as devastating to the Asaba Correspondents Chapel and the entire council.
The NUJ noted that Ochei’s warmth, dedication and contributions to union activities would be sorely missed, while praying for divine strength and comfort for his family and loved ones.
