Popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with cancer, throwing Nigeria’s entertainment industry into mourning.
Family sources said the actor passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, following months of declining health and prolonged absence from the public scene.
Several media platforms reported that the movie star had been privately battling cancer before his death.
News of his death spread rapidly across social media on Tuesday, with fans, colleagues and celebrities expressing shock and grief over the loss of one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces.
Actress Kate Henshaw and several other entertainers were among those who reacted emotionally online, describing his death as heartbreaking and difficult to process.
Ekubo, born on April 10, 1986, rose to prominence after emerging first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest before becoming a household name in Nollywood through blockbuster productions including Weekend Getaway, Bling Lagosians, The Blood Covenant and A Sunday Affair.
Known for his charismatic screen presence, fashion style and romantic film roles, the actor built a strong fan base across Africa and featured in over 100 movies during a career that spanned more than two decades.
Concerns about his wellbeing had intensified in recent months after his sudden disappearance from social media and public events.
Reports and online discussions about his health had circulated since 2025, although some associates initially dismissed the rumours.
