The Corpers Lodge at Edjeba community in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State is now in a deplorable condition, posing serious health hazard and security risk to some corps members still harbouring the lodge.

The lodge built by the administration of former Governor James Ibori aimed to ease the accommodation challenges faced by corps members posted to the Warri area.

However, successive administrations in the state failed to sustain the initiative and lofty ideas behind the building of the Corpers Lodge.

Located in a serene and peaceful Edjeba community, it has male and female lodges with ten rooms each as well as two common rooms for the relaxation of corps members after a hectic day.

NewsNet investigation revealed that today, the lodge has become a nightmare for the few corps members still residing in it as it is heavily flooded whenever it rains, destroying most of their personal effects, including certificates.

The common rooms which are empty without any piece of furniture, have become breeding grounds for rats and dangerous reptiles.

The toilets have become a death trap and the corps members defecate at nearby bushes.

Though the compound is fenced with a gate, oftentimes, hoodlums scale the fence to rob the corps members.

Chief Cashier Ikpuri and former Youth President of Edjeba Community, Mr Sheriff Okekere, who spoke on the efforts of the community to ameliorate the plight of the corps members, said the community has been of tremendous help to the corps members.

They however noted that the community cannot do it alone and appealed to the state and Warri South Local Governments to come to the aid of the corps members by rehabilitating.

When NewsNet contacted the Delta State Commissioner for Youths and Development, Mr Ifeanyi Egwuyenga on phone, he said, “I am already aware, I have been briefed and actions are being taken towards that direction.

“This information was already on my table and we treating it in consonance with the Ministry of Housing.

“I was briefed that those Corpers Lodge were built by the state government as support to NYSC not even by the Ministry of Youths,” said Egwuyenga.”

The Commissioner was however silent on how long the file detailing the deplorable condition of the Corpers Lodge in Warri has been on his table.
