Airport Escape Plan Collapses as NDLEA Nabs ‘KC Luxury’ in ₦39bn Cocaine Cartel Probe

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has broken up an international cocaine trafficking network allegedly using Nigeria as a major transit route to the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia.

At the centre of the investigation is Afolabi Kazeem Michael, popularly known as “KC Luxury,” a self-styled luxury goods dealer and social media personality whom the agency described as the alleged Nigerian coordinator of the syndicate.

The NDLEA stated that Michael was arrested on August 13, 2026, at the boarding area of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, shortly before he was allegedly due to depart Nigeria on a business-class flight to Paris.

According to the agency, his arrest followed intelligence suggesting that he was preparing to flee the country after investigators traced a major cocaine shipment to a wider international trafficking network.

The breakthrough began with the interception of 184.50 kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in a consignment being processed through a courier logistics company in Lagos.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), who disclosed the development while briefing journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, said the seizure triggered a deeper investigation aimed at identifying everyone connected to the shipment.

Marwa said the seized cocaine represented the agency’s largest interception of the substance through a courier company in Nigeria and was estimated to have a potential international value of about ₦39 billion.

Rather than stopping with the seizure, the NDLEA constituted a special investigation team to trace the shipment from the courier handlers to the individuals allegedly controlling the operation.

The investigation, according to Marwa, exposed a chain of intermediary companies and individuals allegedly involved in preparing and moving the consignments.

One of those arrested was Lawal Mujab Kehinde, a staff member of the logistics company through which the cocaine was allegedly processed.

The agency saidted thits investigation revealed that he maintained a direct relationship with the alleged Nigerian coordinator and was involved in packaging and processing consignments destined for the UK, other European countries, and Asia, for which he was allegedly paid.

Investigators subsequently identified Michael, popularly known as “KC Luxury”, as a more senior figure in the alleged operation.

Marwa said the suspect’s public image as a businessman dealing in gold, jewellery and luxury products allegedly provided cover for a drug trafficking enterprise stretching from South America through Nigeria to international destinations.

The NDLEA said Michael was arrested before he could board his flight to Paris and was found carrying €7,750, £2,800 and ₦100,000, alongside expensive jewellery.

A subsequent search of his luxury apartment on Banana Island in Ikoyi, Lagos, also reportedly led to the recovery of exotic vehicles.

The agency said investigators further uncovered the use of false identities to conceal the actual consignors of drug shipments, while financial intermediaries were allegedly used to move billions of naira connected to the syndicate.

According to Marwa, the investigation also revealed links to suspected members of the network in the United Kingdom, with some allegedly already arrested by British authorities in connection with the same trafficking operation.

The NDLEA said the latest breakthrough forms part of a broader campaign against transnational drug networks, following other major operations targeting sophisticated trafficking organisations with international links.

Marwa said the operation demonstrated that traffickers could no longer rely on seemingly legitimate businesses, courier services, luxury residences or carefully cultivated social media identities to shield their activities.

He warned individuals allegedly using glamorous lifestyles and luxury brands as a façade for drug trafficking that the agency would continue to pursue them.

“To those who believe they can hide behind luxury brands, glamorous lifestyles, and social media personas while trafficking poison into our communities and across our borders, this Agency will find you,” Marwa said.

He added that drug trafficking groups were increasingly turning to courier and logistics companies as alternative channels as scrutiny at airports and seaports intensified.

The NDLEA chief credited international cooperation and the work of the agency’s special investigation team for helping to unravel the alleged network, noting that arrests were also made in the UK.

He said the operation sent a strong warning to international drug syndicates that Nigeria would not serve as a safe corridor for the movement of illicit narcotics.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspects had been charged in court as of the time of publication.

The allegations against them remain subject to due process and determination by a competent court.
