INEC goes tough, suspends Sokoto REC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Sokoto State, Dr Nura Ali.

Dr Ali’s suspension which is with immediate effect is contained in a letter on Monday signed by the electoral umpire’s Secretary, Rose Orlaran-Anthony.

The letter addressed to the Resident Electoral Commissioner and the Administrative Secretary in the state, directed Dr Ali to stay away from the Commission’s office in Sokoto State until further notice.

INEC in the letter also directed the Administrative Secretary, Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa to take full charge of the Sokoto State office with immediate effect.

The letter further directed her to liaise with the Supervisory National Commissioner, Professor Muhammad Sani Kaita for further clarifications when necessary.

The suspension comes four days before the conduct of the governorship and House of Assembly elections on Saturday, March 11, 2023.
