Colombian music icon Shakira has revealed that her decision to feature Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy on the official 2026 FIFA World Cup anthem, “Dai Dai,” was driven by both admiration for his artistry and a long-standing desire to collaborate with him.

Speaking in an interview with People Magazine, Shakira described herself as being “obsessed” with Burna Boy’s music, saying she had always envisioned collaborating with the Grammy-winning Nigerian singer on a global project.

“I’ve always wanted to collaborate with Burna Boy. I’m obsessed with him,” Shakira said, explaining that his distinctive voice and musical style made him the perfect choice for the World Cup anthem.

The global pop star added that Burna Boy’s contribution elevated the song, describing his performance as the finishing touch that brought the project to completion.

“When I had Burna Boy record it, that was the cherry on top. I think his voice just takes it to another level,” she said.

Shakira also disclosed that she waited about 20 days for Burna Boy to deliver his verse, noting that the wait was worthwhile because his contribution exceeded her expectations.

The collaboration marked another milestone for Burna Boy, whose influence continues to extend beyond Afrobeats into major international sporting and entertainment events.
