The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has urged the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to promptly assent to the recently passed Delta State Community Security Corps Agency Bill by the State Legislature.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Emmanuel Enebeli, and Secretary, Shedrack Onitsha, the Forum emphasised that swift assent to the critical legislation would pave the way for immediate implementation, especially in communities currently grappling with insecurity.

“A prompt assent to this vital law will set the tone for its swift implementation, ensuring that communities under threat from criminal elements begin to enjoy renewed hope, protection, and stability,” the Forum stated.

To ensure the success of the initiative, the Forum urged the state government to establish a robust implementation structure, underpinned by adequate funding, transparency, and professional oversight.

“We also advocate synergy with conventional security agencies, traditional institutions, and community leaders to enhance the effectiveness of the Corps across the 25 local government areas,” it added.

DOPF congratulated the Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor-led leadership and the entire Delta State House of Assembly for the successful passage of what it described as a “bold and timely legislative action,” necessary to curb the rising insecurity affecting lives, livelihoods, and local development.

“We recall that DOPF has consistently championed the call for a holistic, community-driven security framework to complement existing structures in tackling rural banditry, kidnapping, herder-farmer clashes, and other criminal activities plaguing Delta communities.”

According to the Forum, the passage of the bill reflects the Legislature’s responsiveness to the needs and concerns of the people.

“As professional media practitioners with deep grassroots engagement, we view the establishment of the Community Security Corps as a pragmatic solution capable of restoring public confidence—particularly in rural areas. Significantly, the bill provides a legal framework for the recruitment, training, and deployment of community-based security operatives who are familiar with the terrain and local dynamics.”

DOPF further highlighted that improved rural security would enhance agricultural productivity, boost agribusiness, and support food security across the state.

“The return of safety to our farmlands will significantly drive food production and economic stability. We commend the House of Assembly for this patriotic move and reaffirm our commitment to supporting public sensitisation and awareness on the objectives of this legislation,” the statement concluded.
