The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, Dickson Ovat Agbor, indefinitely over allegations of domestic violence.
The decision was taken during plenary on Thursday following a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo.
Presenting the motion, Etta condemned the alleged incident, describing it as behaviour inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of elected public officials.
He told the House that members of the legislature must conduct themselves in ways that reflect the trust placed in them by their constituents and protect the integrity of the Assembly.
Following deliberations, lawmakers resolved that Agbor be barred from all legislative activities pending the outcome of a formal investigation into the allegations.
The Assembly subsequently constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the matter and submit its findings for further legislative action.
Agbor, who was present during the plenary session, was escorted out of the chamber after the resolution for his suspension was adopted.
The development has drawn attention to issues of accountability and ethical conduct among public office holders in Cross River State.
