Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has called on Nigerians to remain committed to democratic values, support ongoing reforms by President Bola Tinubu, and actively participate in the nation’s electoral process as the country marks 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a statement on Friday to commemorate June 12, Dafinone described the date as a historic symbol of the sacrifices, resilience and determination of Nigerians in the struggle for democratic governance, justice and national development.
According to the senator, Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the enduring power of the people’s will and the need to preserve the democratic ideals for which many patriots fought and made sacrifices.
“As we commemorate Democracy Day and mark another significant milestone in our nation’s democratic journey, I extend my warm felicitations to the good people of Delta Central Senatorial District and all Nigerians,” Dafinone said.
He noted that Nigeria’s democratic journey since returning to civilian rule in 1999 has recorded steady progress, despite persistent economic and social challenges.
“While our nation may be grappling with economic and social difficulties, like many other nations, we must remain steadfast in our commitment to democracy as the best form of government. Democracy provides the platform for accountability, participation and peaceful change, and we must never allow temporary setbacks to diminish our faith in the democratic process,” he stated.
The lawmaker urged Nigerians to continue supporting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the government’s reform agenda is designed to reposition the country for long-term prosperity, economic stability and sustainable development.
“I urge all Nigerians to continue to support and pray for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as it implements critical reforms aimed at repositioning our country for greater prosperity, economic stability and sustainable development,” he said.
Acknowledging the hardships associated with some of the ongoing economic policies, Dafinone expressed optimism that the reforms would yield positive results in the long run.
“Though some of the ongoing economic policies may require patience and sacrifice, the signs of long-term transformation are evident. With unity, perseverance and collective commitment, Nigeria will emerge stronger and better positioned to fulfil its immense potential,” he added.
The senator also used the occasion to encourage greater civic participation among citizens, particularly in the area of voter registration and electoral engagement.
He called on eligible Nigerians, especially residents of Delta Central, to take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“Democracy thrives when citizens participate fully, especially through voting and civic engagement. With the Continuous Voter Registration exercise ongoing, I encourage all eligible citizens who have yet to register to seize this opportunity to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards. The future of our nation depends on the choices we make, and every vote remains a powerful instrument for shaping good governance and leadership,” Dafinone said.
Expressing gratitude to his constituents, the senator thanked the people of Delta Central for the confidence and support they have continued to place in him since his election to the Senate.
He also appreciated their support for the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the All Progressives Congress (APC), while urging political unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“As we look ahead to the 2027 elections, Delta Central must remain strategically positioned at the centre of national politics and development. We cannot afford to be spectators in the affairs that shape our future, or return to opposition politics. Let us remain united, committed and supportive of the APC as the mainstream platform for advancing the interests of our people and building a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
Dafinone concluded by wishing Nigerians a happy Democracy Day and reaffirming his commitment to the advancement of Delta Central and the nation at large.
