The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Delta State Branch, has condemned the recent circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), calling it a direct attack on doctors’ welfare and a catalyst for impending nationwide industrial action.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the Chairman, Dr. Israel Adaigho, the association decried the June 27, 2025, circular adjusting allowances under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) as a breach of long-standing Collective Bargaining Agreements and a violation of established wage relativity.

The Delta NMA expressed full support for the 21-day ultimatum issued by the national body of the NMA to the Federal Government, demanding immediate withdrawal of the NSIWC circular and fulfillment of several key demands, including: Restoration of wage relativity and professional allowances, Payment of outstanding CONMESS arrears and allowances, Review and proper funding of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) and Universal application of CONMESS to stem internal brain drain.

Other demands are the Issuance of retirement age and non-physician consultant appointment circulars, Removal of tax obstacles on doctors’ allowances and Urgent review of CONMESS.

Warning of a looming national health crisis, the association urged President Bola Tinubu, lawmakers, and relevant authorities to intervene swiftly. Dr. Adaigho also appealed to state governments to prioritize doctors’ welfare, stressing that the nation’s collapsing health sector cannot withstand further strain.

“Nigerian doctors are overburdened, underpaid, and increasingly leaving the country,” Adaigho stated. “Without decisive action, a nationwide strike may be inevitable.
