The Delta State Government has threatened to close down all illegal gas plants and shops in the state.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr Chris Onogba stated this while briefing newsmen on the pains of the state government over the gas explosion that occurred at the weekend in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area.

Onogba disclosed that there were also moves to relocate gas plants and shops from residential areas.

While describing the Agbor gas explosion incidence as unfortunate, the Commissioner commiserated with the families that lost their loved ones.

He said the state government had noticed with great concern and interest the emerging activities of domestic gas plants and shops, many of which were operated by untrained personnel and some without the required license to operate.

Onogba explained that the Ministry being aware of the essential services provided by gas plants and shops with the global drive towards safer and cleaner energy had last year initiated proactive measures that would ensure environmental safety precautions to protect lives and properties.

The Environment Commissioner stated that efforts were also made to hold meetings with all stakeholders at local and state levels to address the issues.

Onogba said plans were on to train owners and gas plants operators to minimize gas-related accidents.

He disclosed that a monitoring team would be constituted to oversee the distribution and sales of gas in the state.
