Delta govt blames building defect for collapsed billionaire hotel under construction

The Delta State Government says a building defect led to the collapse of a section of the proposed 20-storey hotel building under construction in Asaba, the state capital.

The State Commissioner for Urban Renewal, Mr Michael Anoka, disclosed this to newsmen after inspecting the building on Thursday.

Anoka who said there was no casualty noted that: ”The Ministry is still investigating. The government is already taking measures and as you can see, the compound has been sealed. After our investigation, we will come up with a report of what happened here today.

“Everybody should be calm; the government has already started measures before this incident today. We are trying to put up a process that we will be able to avoid such situations.”

At least eight persons have been recorded injured in Thursday’s building collapse.

The proposed 20-storey hotel building which is under construction directly opposite the popular ShopRite in Asaba caved in during construction works.

The collapsed building is said to be owned by popular businessman and Rain Oil Group founder, Gabriel Ogbechie.

The eyewitness who identified herself as Onyinye Okei said about eight persons sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital by their colleagues.
