Delta Government has decried the attack on Okpanam Division of the Nigeria Police in Oshimili North Local Government Area by unknown gunmen.
Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Chief Patrick Ukah, described the attack on policemen attached to the station and the Okpanam Vigilante Security Outfit as a dastardly act with an assurance that the state government will bring the perpetrators to book.
The SSG stated this when he visited the Okpanam police station for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused during the attack.
He expressed dismay that some persons for no just reason could attack the peaceful community of Okpanam, saying that it was painful, unexpected and an act of wickedness.
The SSG said the attack was unacceptable in the state and assured that government would do everything possible to ensure that the culprits were brought to book.
Chief Ukah also assured that there would not be a second attempt as security agencies including the vigilante were on top of the new challenges, while investigation was ongoing on the attack which occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the station, a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, Mr Gambo Ado conducted the SSG round the premises of the station.
Explaining how the sad incident was executed, Mr Ado said the attack took place at the gate of the station while the police officers were driving out in response to the distress call.
The SSG later visited the Federal Medical Center FMC, Asaba, where he was received by the Chief Medical Director, Dr Victor Osiatuma, who took him to the patient at the emergency unit of the FMC.
Chief Ukah sympathized with the vigilante member, Mr Ekene Okonji, who was responding to treatment as a result of injuries sustained during the attack, promising to offset the hospital bills.
The Chairman of the Okpanam vigilante outfit, Emeka Okolie, disclosed that five members of the vigilante who were on duty on Sunday morning were attacked at about 4.35am by the gunmen which prompted them to put a distress call to the police to inform them of the attack.
He said three of his men sustained injuries but two had been discharged while the remaining two were unhurt.
It would be recalled that Okpanam police station was attacked in the early hours of Sunday, leading to the loss of three police officers in the attack.
The officers were said to be responding to a distress call from the Okpanam community.
