Ninety students from Delta North are set to begin their academic journey at the Sports University of Nigeria, Idumuje-Ugboko, under the Senator Ned Nwoko Scholarship Scheme, following the successful completion of a comprehensive screening exercise.
The fully funded initiative, announced earlier this year, will provide 10 beneficiaries from each of the nine local government areas in Delta North with scholarships covering both tuition and accommodation.
“This is a lifeline and an answered prayer for many families,” said Eze Onwenna, a supporter of the programme. “Senator Nwoko’s commitment to youth empowerment is not just inspiring — it is transformative.”
Renowned for its cutting-edge facilities and excellence in sports and academic disciplines, the Sports University of Nigeria will serve as the new academic home for the beneficiaries. Beyond academics, the scholarship aims to foster leadership, discipline, and excellence among young people.
Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North in the National Assembly, has consistently emphasised education as the cornerstone of sustainable development.
The scholarship programme joins his other people-oriented initiatives aimed at building human capacity and empowering young Nigerians.
“This milestone is a strong testament to the Senator’s vision of societal reorientation and sustainable development,” Onwenna added. “We look forward to seeing these young minds thrive and emerge as ambassadors of Delta North and Nigeria.”
With the screening now complete, preparations are in top gear for the students’ official enrollment at the university, with academic activities expected to commence in the coming weeks.
Observers say the initiative will not only boost access to quality education but also drive sports development, youth leadership, and community transformation across Delta North and beyond.
