Members of the Delta State Sports Supporters Club have applauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the ongoing renovation of the Warri City Stadium, describing the project as a major boost to sports development in the state.
The group, led by its Chairman, Chief Chuks Anyiam, gave the commendation after an inspection visit to the facility, where they assessed the level of work completed so far.
The stadium, once a prominent venue for sporting activities in Delta State, had in recent years fallen into disrepair, making it unsuitable for high-level matches.
However, since assuming office in 2023, Governor Oborevwori has prioritised the upgrade of key infrastructure in the Warri–Uvwie axis, with the stadium project among the flagship interventions.
Speaking to journalists after the visit, Chief Anyiam expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of the ongoing work, noting that the facility is gradually regaining its status as a top sporting destination.
“What we have seen here today is a clear demonstration of commitment. The quality of work on the pitch and surrounding facilities shows that this is not just a facelift, but a serious upgrade,” he said.
He highlighted improvements to the playing pitch and drainage system, recalling that flooding had previously limited the usability of the stadium.
“For years, this stadium could not host top-level matches. With the improvements to the playing surface and drainage, we are confident it will soon meet national standards again,” Anyiam added.
The chairman emphasised the importance of the project to the sporting identity of the area.
“Warri has always been a stronghold for sports in Delta State. Reviving this stadium is key to restoring that legacy and giving young athletes a platform to grow,” he noted.
He also pointed to the broader impact of the project on athletes and fans.
“This project will reduce the burden on our athletes and supporters who often travel long distances for competitions. It brings opportunities closer to the people,” he said.
Other members of the delegation, including the club’s secretary, Chief Lawrence Akpoveso, commended the state government for sustaining funding for the project and ensuring proper supervision.
“Consistent funding and supervision are critical to projects like this, and we are encouraged by what we have seen so far,” Akpoveso said.
He added that the upgraded facility would support multiple sporting activities.
“When completed, this facility will not only serve football but also other sporting events, helping to build a more vibrant sports culture in Warri and its environs,” he said.
Also speaking, a member of the club, Raymond Thompson, highlighted the economic benefits of the project.
“Beyond sports, this project has economic value. It will attract visitors, create small business opportunities, and energise the local economy,” he said.
Thompson further stressed the social impact of a functional sports facility.
“A functional stadium brings people together. It gives youths something positive to engage in and helps steer them away from negative influences,” he added.
The Delta State Sports Supporters Club, a non-profit organisation, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sports development and mobilising support for initiatives that enhance youth engagement and athletic excellence.
