Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have broken up a violent criminal syndicate responsible for a string of armed robberies, murders, rapes, and other attacks in the Ughelli axis.
Acting on intelligence, officers of the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) raided a criminal hideout on the outskirts of Panama Layout, Ughelli, at about 8:30 p.m. on 19 November 2025. The location had been identified as the operational base of the gang.
Four suspects were arrested during the operation: Peter Ejenekevwe (31), also known as Calamity and believed to be the gang leader; Clever David (35); Chukwuemeka Gospel Onuchukwu (29); and Onome Collins (32).
Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said the suspects confessed to the November 11 robbery and murder of Anthony Igoroko Omowho at Ekredjebor.
According to the Command, they admitted robbing the victim and his wife, trailing him to Saint Nicholas Hospital, and stabbing him to death after robbing medical staff.
The gang also confessed to robbing a POS operator, injuring her husband, and raping the victim’s 18-year-old sister-in-law the same day.
A search of the surrounding bush led to the recovery of two locally made long guns, three locally made short guns, 23 live cartridges, and keys to a Lexus 350 SUV, which was later traced and recovered with registration number KUJ 788 DR.
As the CP-SAT operatives withdrew from the area, they were ambushed by fleeing gang members.
The officers returned fire and repelled the attack. All four arrested suspects sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange and were later confirmed dead at General Hospital, Ughelli. A police officer was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The Command said the bodies of the suspects have been deposited at the morgue, while investigations continue.
