The Delta State Traffic Management Agency, DESTMA, has alerted members of the public, especially motorists, on the activities of an illegal task force in some parts of the state that is carrying out the work of the agency.
Director-General of the Agency, Retired Commodore Azubuike Idah, while speaking with journalists in his office at Asaba, the is an outfit set up by the State Government to ensure a good driving culture which is in tandem with extant laws.
The DESTMA DG said that members of the task force were Illegally doing DESTMA work by holding people for running one way and for violating traffic lights in which they were not in any way authorised to do so.
According to Idah, DESTMA officials are civil servants whose salaries are paid on monthly basis and are not in any way out for revenue while that of the task force is on a commission basis.
While saying that what members of the task force are doing is illegal, Idah implored members of the public not to mistake the task force for DESTMA officials.
The DESTMA DG disclosed that traffic lights that were hitherto not functional have been restored, stressing that Deltans should always obey the traffic lights.
He noted that one of the dangerous things about driving was disobeying traffic rules adding that the use of mobile phone while driving is against the traffic management law
The DESTMA DG noted that there is a law against disobeying traffic management officials crossing school children in school zones, emphasising that all motorists must slow down when they come to school zones because, according to him, children have the right of way in school zones.
