Senator Nwoko’s Big Tech Accountability Bill: Key Takeaways from His X Space Engagement

Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North Senatorial District has once again stirred meaningful conversation with his latest legislative move, a bill to mandate establishment of physical offices by multinational social media companies, which recently gained massive attention during an interactive X Space session on Friday.

Here are key points from the Senator’s direct engagement:

Bringing Global Standards Home

As a UK-trained lawyer, Senator Ned Nwoko stressed that his advocacy is not personal but driven by the need to replicate best practices in Nigeria’s digital space. “My bills and motions are not about me. I understand how things work in developed countries, and I want to see same here,” he noted.

What the Bill Actually Proposes

The bill is not about gagging free speech. It is about structure, responsibility, and protection. It proposes the creation of a regulatory framework that will ensure social media platforms have physical offices in Nigeria and comply with local laws, just like they do in other countries.

Job Creation & Economic Benefits

According to Senator Nwoko, compelling tech giants to open offices in Nigeria will create thousands of jobs in law, media, technology, and customer service. It will also drive skill transfer and open up more opportunities for Nigerian professionals.

No Room for Fake News

The Senator emphasized that freedom of speech should not translate to freedom to defame, mislead, or destroy lives. He stated, “Many people have lost their lives or fallen into depression because of fake news. Bloggers shouldn’t make money at the expense of others.”

Global Precedents

The Senator pointed to similar laws in India and the European Union, stressing that Nigeria is not reinventing the wheel but simply protecting its digital space and economy like other sovereign nations.

Nigeria Has Leverage

Addressing fears that platforms might pull out of Nigeria, he said: “These companies will not leave. Nigeria is a major market with over 100 million internet users. Our participation is too valuable for them to ignore.”

Data Protection & Security

One of the strong pillars of the bill is protecting Nigerians’ data and ensuring grievances against tech companies can be addressed locally.

In the Senator’s words: “This bill is about accountability, not censorship. It is time Nigeria demands responsible digital engagement, the same way we regulate banking, telecoms, and oil multinationals.”
