Media Attacks On Senator Dafinone: When Criticism Becomes a Tool for Political Blackmail

Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has appealed to all parties involved in the renewed hostilities in Warri to exercise restraint and shun acts of violence.

In a statement issued early Tuesday, Senator Dafinone expressed “deep concern over reports of a fresh crisis between the Itsekiris and Urhobos in Warri South Local Government Area.”

He urged the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly to de-escalate the situation and guarantee the safety of all communities.

Highlighting the long history of coexistence between both ethnic groups, the Senator noted that the Urhobos and Itsekiris have shared strong cultural, social, and economic bonds for decades, stressing that such ties must not be destroyed by avoidable conflicts.

The lawmaker appealed to both sides to embrace dialogue and peace, warning that violence only brings “pain, destruction, and setbacks to our communities,” while peace remains priceless and irreplaceable.

Senator Dafinone said he was particularly troubled by reports of attacks on the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) House at Okere-Urhobo, which also left some Urhobo youths injured.

“Such acts are deeply regrettable, as the UPU represents the heritage and identity of the Urhobo people worldwide. An attack on the UPU is, by extension, an attack on the entire Urhobo Nation. I urge the authorities to investigate these incidents thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he stated.

On the role of law enforcement, Dafinone stressed that security agencies must remain neutral, fair, and proactive to prevent escalation.

According to him, “The Urhobos of Warri, like all citizens, deserve protection from the Nigerian state. Security measures must always prioritise dialogue, trust-building, and reconciliation, as these are the surest safeguards against a recurrence of conflict.”

The Senator further called on traditional rulers, community elders, youth groups, and political actors to join hands in promoting peace, unity, and mutual respect.

He also underscored the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conclude the Supreme Court-ordered delineation exercise in Warri Federal Constituency, stressing that completing the process would help resolve longstanding grievances and lay a stronger foundation for peaceful coexistence.

“Together, we can sustain the bonds of brotherhood and build a future anchored on justice and harmony,” Dafinone added.
