Reps move to halt FG’s spending of £4.2m Ibori loot

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Finance to halt forthwith, the further appropriation of 4.2 million pounds recovered Ibori loot pending the final determination of the matter by the National Assembly.

This followed a motion under matter of urgent national importance by the Minority Leader of the House, Hon Ndudi Elumelu and nine other members of the House from Delta State at the House plenary on Wednesday.

The lawmakers have kicked against the move by the Federal Government to appropriate the recovered 4.2 million pounds recovered from the British Government to itself without recourse to the Delta State Government or the National Assembly.

They said unless the national Assembly approves the fund, the Executive arms cannot appropriate such monies to itself.

The House requested the Federal Government to furnish the House with all particulars relating to the recovered money.

Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, Minority Leader, House of Representatives briefing Journalist at the end of plenary, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Caucus in House described the development as a miscarriage of justice.

The lawmakers pointed out that the fund is 6.2 million Pound and if the amount of ceased Assets is added and not 4.2 million Pounds as alleged by the Federal Government.

They maintained that the money belongs to Delta State and the State should not be deprived of the money to further use it for infrastructural development.

The House has mandated the Committees on Finance, Justice, Loans and Recovered Funds to investigate the matter and report to the House within two weeks.
