The Senate has ordered an immediate investigation and rehabilitation of the Ujevwu–Itakpe Train Line following a motion raised on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, by Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central), who expressed concern over recurring derailments and frequent suspension of services on the route.
Speaking during plenary, Dafinone drew attention to the persistent failures along the corridor and called for an urgent probe, full rehabilitation, and stronger safety measures to protect passengers and safeguard what he described as a vital national infrastructure.
He noted that the Ujevwu–Itakpe corridor, which links the South-South through Delta State to the North-Central region, remains crucial for the movement of passengers, goods, and industrial materials.
The senator further urged the Federal Government to extend the line from Itakpe to Abuja to ensure full national rail connectivity. According to him, such an extension would ease hardship, improve maintenance systems, and expand the operational fleet to meet the growing demand for passenger and cargo services.
Following deliberations, the Senate adopted all the resolutions contained in Dafinone’s motion, including directives for the immediate repair of vandalised tracks and a comprehensive investigation into the state of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure, with particular attention to the proposed Itakpe–Abuja extension.
Dafinone maintained that the motion reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to building a safer, modern, and efficient rail network capable of driving economic growth and national development.
