A novelty football match between the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta Broadcasting Service Warri Chapel and NUJ Warri Correspondents Chapel on Wednesday ended in a one-all draw.

The match played at the DBS Warri football field was to kickstart the maiden press week of the NUJ DBS Warri Chapel, the oldest Chapel of the Delta State Council of the Union.

It was a thrilling encounter as both teams tried to gain superiority.

NUJ DBS Warri Chapel came through five minutes before the end of the first half with an exciting show of brilliance from the team Captain, Tunde Basunu, who displayed resilience to frustrate the effort of their counterpart.

An equaliser came through at the nick of stoppage time to see both sides sharing the spoils.

Ughojor Godstime, the goalkeeper for NUJ DBS Warri Chapel won the man of the match following his excellent saves which curtailed the onslaught of the Warri Correspondents Chapel team, who received a cash gift from the General Manager, DBS Warri, Pastor Malcolm Oteri, who was represented by the Deputy General Manager, Account and Finance, Mrs Augusta Okoro.

Pastor Oteri earlier while declaring open the event noted that the maiden press week of the NUJ DBS Warri Chapel was apt as it would help to sustain the unity amongst Journalists in Warri and its environs as well as build the physical and mental health of journalists through sporting activities.

He commended the Chairman of the NUJ DBS Warri Chapel for putting the Press Week together.

On her part, the Chairman of the NUJ, DBS Warri Chapel, Comrade Sonia Unobonjo said Journalists must be celebrated for their commitment towards quality reportage and being at the Vanguard of raising public awareness about Government activities and programmes.

She also hinted that the Chapel as part of the Press Week will visit and recognise veterans who have contributed to the development of the profession and called on the Management of DBS Warri to continue to support the Union.

State Assistant Secretary of the NUJ Delta State Council, Comrade Felix Ekwu and Chairman of the NUJ Warri Correspondent Chapel, Comrade Victor Okpomo amongst others said the Press Week would afford Journalists the opportunity to cement their relationship, share challenges and information that would help in their day to day activities.

While reflecting on the theme of the Press Week: Journalist Practice in the build-up to 2023 General Elections in Nigeria, they added that the Press Week sought to prepare Journalists on all fronts in the build-up to the general elections.

Among the top Management staff of DBS Warri present at the novelty football match to begin the Chapel’s Press Week were Head, News and Current Affairs Department, Mrs Gift Seimode, Head Public Relations Unit, Becky Ebojoh and Mrs Itse Igboeje.

The NUJ DBS Warri Chapel Press Week will be concluded on Friday, December 3, 2021, with lectures and awards beginning at 2pm at Casa De Pedro Annex Hotel Hall along Refinery Road, Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State.
