Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, was the star of the night as Galatasaray sealed a 1-0 home victory over Liverpool in their UEFA Champions League second group match on Tuesday.
Osimhen, named Man of the Match, netted the only goal of the encounter in the 16th minute. The 2023 African Player of the Year stepped up confidently to smash his penalty past Alisson after Baris Alper Yilmaz was fouled by Dominik Szoboszlai inside the box.
The goal not only handed Galatasaray their first win of the campaign following defeat in their opening fixture but also made history — Osimhen became the first Nigerian player to reach 10 goals in the UEFA Champions League.
His return to scoring form will be a major boost for the Super Eagles coaching crew ahead of October’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
The former Napoli talisman missed Nigeria’s September clash with South Africa in Bloemfontein due to injury sustained in the tie against Rwanda. Despite that setback, he has already netted three times in the ongoing qualifiers, with goals against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
With Osimhen back in action and firing, the Super Eagles will look to capitalize on his sharp form as the road to the 2026 World Cup continues.
