NLC begins strike over fuel hike June 7

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) will from Wednesday, June 7, 2023, embark on a nationwide action against the recent hike in price of fuel.

Recall that newly sworn-in President Bola Tinubu, had during his inaugural speech on Monday, May 29 announced an end to the fuel subsidy regime in the country, resulting in the adjustment of pump price for fuel by petrol filling station owners a few hours later.

Although the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on Wednesday released a new template fuel price depending on the state or region of the country, the new price regime without a clear-cut roadmap to achieving the removal of subsidy appeared to be unacceptable to the NLC.

The declaration of the strike action by the NLC is contained in a letter addressed to the chairpersons of all NLC State Councils after the National Executive Council meeting of the apex labour body in Nigeria held Friday, June 2, 2023.

The letter, signed the NLC General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, requested all State Chairpersons of the Congress ” to mobilise workers for the action”.

The letter reads below:

NOTICE ON MOBILISATION FOR NATIONWIDE WITHDRAWAL OF SERVICES

We bring you greetings from the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

You will recall that arising from the National Executive Council meeting held on 2nd June 2023, it was decided that Congress will embark on a nationwide action and withdrawal of services, against the fraudulent increase in the price of fuel across the thirty-six states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the FCT.

Please be informed that the nationwide action will commence on Wednesday, 7th June, 2023. To this effect, we request that all State Chairpersons should mobilise workers for the action and ensure full compliance with the directives as services in both the public and private sector are expected to be fully withdrawn by Wednesday, 7th June, 2023.

All State Chairpersons are expected to fully abide by the decisions of the National Executive Council.
